Moisturising Homemade Shampoo

14 May

This shampoo is simple to make & leaves your hair smooth, shiny & smelling devine, what more could you want?

8355F1E6-DA48-40FD-8A54-9BB6BD1B64F2_2048x

Its so gentle you can use it on children, my Miss 7 has developed an aversion to brushing her mid-back length hair which leads to all manners of knots, dreads & mess. It’s awful. I have to fight with her to brush it, all the while with her whining & screaming.

This shampoo is a god send, I only use about 2 teaspoons to do all her hair & lather it up with lots of water & it gently eases away all the knots & leaves her hair silky & hydrated which makes it easy to brush & it doesn’t seem to tangle up the same after its been washed with this shampoo.

We also use about a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in about a cup of cool water as a final rinse & her hair is lovely, no more dead dry, knotty hair.

Moisturising Coconut Shampoo
1/4 Cup of Coconut Milk
1/4 cup of Castile Soap
2 teaspoon of Almond Oil
10 Drops of Sweet Orange
5 Drops of Rose Germanium
5 Drops of Ylang Ylang
Mix all ingredients together into a bottle and shake well.

Keep in the fridge to ensure it doesn’t spoil.

Vegan Shaving Cream Recipe

22 Mar

This Shaving Cream is so luxurious & soothing for your skin, but the best part is that the smell is simply divine.

The whipped consistency is so fluffy & gentle & makes shaving a breeze. While the nourishing oils ensure your skin is left silky smooth & hydrated with no need to moisturise – dry, scaley legs be gone.

The only downside to using this Shaving Cream is that it melts in Summer, so you have to keep it in the fridge so that it keeps its whipped consistency. But with no preservative the fridge will keep it from spoiling so its still a win/win.

Try making your own today.

IMG_6011

Ingredients

1 TBSP Macadamia Nut Oil
1 Cup Coconut Oil
10 drops of Geranium Oil
15 drops of Palmerosa Oil
3 TBSP Castile Soap
Steps

1. Add all ingredients to a cold bowl.

2. Using a hand mixer or table mixer, whip ingredients for about 4 minutes or until light and fluffy.

3. Transfer your shaving cream to a container.

A little bit of advice

We are not using a preservative in this recipe so you must be careful to not allow water to get into your shaving cream. Water will cause bacteria and your shaving cream will spoil. Only use enough to coat the area you are shaving as otherwise it just becomes a messy, waste 🙂 The shaving cream will melt quite quickly once making contact with your skin, its supposed to & your skin will still get all the nourishing benefits of the oils.

The shelf life of this shaving cream should be about 3 months if kept in a cool dark place. Depending on the temperature of your bathroom, the cream could melt or harden. That’s okay, the fluffiness is only to imitate the texture of a store bought shaving cream. Texture will not effect the benefits. You can re-whip it if you like.

Oil Cleansing Method & Recipe

21 Feb

Oil cleansing is something I resisted, it seemed really weird to me to wash your skin with oil, especially because I did suffer from oily skin & the odd pimple. It seemed counterintuitive to douse my skin in oil each night.

But oil cleansing is the bomb!!

You have to try it, my skin is softer, more supple, has no breakouts & doesn’t dry out in winter now or get too oily in summer. It has really helped to balance my skin out.

I am a convert.

And the best part about Oil Cleansing is that you can custom create your own oil blend to address your skins issues.

IMG_5082

So how does it work?

It works on the like dissolves like theory. Your cleansing oil soaks deep into your pores to naturally & gently dissolve bacteria & dirt that is clogging up your pores. It then replaces this clogged up sebum with natural, soothing & healing plant oils that help to replenish your skin & natural radiance.

It really is magic in a bottle. Best thing of all is that after several weeks of using this method you will notice any blackheads disappearing & your pores diminishing. It is truly that magic if you consistently use the method each evening.

To make the oil cleansing method even more effective I also use our Konjac sponge to remove the oil. It adds a gentle exfoliation factor that helps to take the method to the next level.

So how do you oil cleanse?

Every evening rinse your face with warm water to begin opening your pores, take a small amount of oil (about a 5 cents piece worth) into your palm & gently massage it into your skin.

I like to do this in the shower as it helps to steam open your pores ( & multi-tasking :).

Massage the oil in for several minutes so it has time to deeply penetrate your pores & dissolve all the gunk from the day.

Then I simply wet my Konjac sponge with warm water & begin the process of removing the oil. The bubbly surface of the Konjac sponge will not only exfoliate your skin it will also trap any dirt or makeup on the sponge.

I rinse & gently squeeze out the sponge between each wipe until the sponge comes off clean & oil free.

There should still be some oil residue on your skin – you want this, it will go to work replenishing & restoring your skin while you sleep & if you have oily skin like me you won’t need to moisturise the oil will do it for you.

Once Im out of the shower & have dried my face, I simply spritz with some Organic Witchhazel water to tone my skin & close my pores.

The below recipe is the recipe I am using at the moment & this is why?

Castor oil is naturally astringent & will pull impurities from the skin – this is why you find it in almost all Cleansing oils.

Jojoba oil is great for balancing oily, acne prone skin & is also very nourishing for your skin.

Camellia oil is a little different it is actually green tea oil, its super high in antioxidants & reduces the appearance of ageing while also being anti-inflammatory & mildly astringent.

Frankincense is great for oily skin, diminishing wrinkles & dark spots or pigmentation.

But you can make your own Cleansing Oil from just about any Organic Oils you can get your hands on. Just ensure that you don’t go above 50% castor oil & that you also include oils that your skin finds nourishing like apricot or almond or even olive oil. The addition of essential oil is completely up to you, it just adds a few extra healing properties that I find my skin likes.

Skin Balancing, Anti-ageing Oil Cleanser Recipe
3 teaspoons castor oil
5 teaspoons jojoba oil
2 teaspoons camelila oil
3 drops francincense essential oil
Instructions

Measure your oils into an opaque or brown bottle (to stop the sun light making the oil rancid) mix together & viola you will have several weeks worth of cleansing oil.

NOTE – in the first week of using this method I did get a few breakouts, this is just your pores getting de-congested. By week 2 or 3 you should be seeing clearer more radiant skin & you will notice that your blackheads are disappearing.

Titanium Dioxide Unsafe – Causes Cancer in Studies

30 Jan

The world is a buzz with news of the dangers of Titanium Dioxide.

tidi-article-lollies

Newspapers, News reports & articles aplenty are all surfacing about the dangers of Titanium Dioxide. Our local radio station even included the issue in their news bulletin this morning when I was dropping the kidlets to school.

The Sydney Morning Herald has a great article on the dangers & a video of Professor Thomas Faunce speaking about nano particles in our foods & the effects they may be having on our children – high incidences of Auto-immune diseases & the rise in childhood autism.

Why all of a sudden is there so much interest in the safety of Titanium Dioxide?

Researchers from France and Luxembourg gave E171 (the much more food friendly name for Titanium Dioxide) in Europe and the United States, to lab rats in their drinking water for 100 days.

Of those rats, 40 per cent of the exposed rodents developed “preneoplastic lesions” or precancerous growths. The Titanium Dioxide also inhibited the immune systems of the rats and “accelerated” the growth of the lesions. France’s INRA agricultural research institute, which took part in the study, said in a statement.“These results demonstrate a role in initiating and promoting the early stages of colorectal cancer formation,” though it said no conclusion could be drawn about later phases of cancer, or of any danger to humans……….(not till they test it on us!!)

The results of the study were published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports.

Reacting to the report, France’s ministers of health, agriculture and economy instructed the country’s food health and safety agency, Anses, to investigate whether the additive poses a risk for human health. The agency has till the end of March to release its findings.

The study was said to be prompted by “growing concerns that daily oral… Intake is associated with an increased risk of chronic intestinal inflammation and carcinogenesis”, or cancer formation”.

So what does this have to do with you?

Well asides from making you re-think that M & M addiction (chocolate coated in Titanium Dioxide…..anyone?!)

Titanium dioxide is found in pretty much all makeup & sunscreen.

And studies have long shown that products applied to the skin end up in the bloodstream within half an hour. With penetration rates depending on  where they are applied. Absorption rates for your face & scalp are 5-10 times higher than on other parts of our body (Hotchkiss 1994).

Not to mention that in 2005, the Environmental Working Group published a combination of two studies that found toxic chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies born in the U.S. in the fall of 2004. They screened for more than 400 chemicals, and an astounding 287 toxins were detected within the umbilical cord blood of these newborns. Of these 287 chemicals, 217 were neurotoxins, and 208 are known to damage growth development or cause birth defects.

So, it comes down to whether you want to take the risk of having Titanium Dioxide in your blood stream?

We have long been passionate about avoiding exposure to Titanium Dioxide & are proud that our products offer a safe alternative to Women everywhere. We strongly urge you to ditch your toxic, unsafe makeup & find a safer alternative like our brand MG Naturals. Where your beauty does not have to come at the price of your health.

Why Zinc Oxide is the Best Natural Sunscreen?

21 Jan

It’s summer here in Australia & you can’t leave the house without some form of Sun Protection on, or you will be fryed to a crisp within minutes.

But what sun protection is safe?,

It’s not always possible or practical to wear a hat & protective clothing so finding safe ways to protect your skin from the sun is important.

Zinc Oxide is oftentimes referred to as the only safe sun protection available in a tube.

It protects your skin from the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays making it the most comprehensive natural sunscreen ingredient currently available. It provides the best UVA ray protection of all current sunscreen chemicals.

But what makes Zinc Oxide truly safe is that it’s a barrier sun protectant and sits on top of your skin forming a shield between you and the rays of the sun. As long as non-nano particle zinc is used  the zinc will not be absorbed by your body & remains on the surface of the skin.

The sun protection occurs through the Zinc Oxide sunscreen particles sitting on the outermost layer of your skin where they reflect and scatter the ultraviolet rays, protecting the living skin layers below. Zinc Oxide is really the broadest of all the sunscreen ingredients. It protects against UVA and UVB radiation up to wavelengths of 380mm.

In addition, it is the only active sunscreen ingredient approved by the FDA for babies under six months, making it without a doubt the best and gentlest, natural sun protectant available. Zinc oxide is widely known for its skin benefits and is used as a skin protectant in many different applications because of its soothing, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc oxide is the active ingredient in many nappy rash creams, which is pretty clear evidence that it is gentle and safe for even the most sensitive of skins.

Zinc oxide occurs in nature as the mineral zincite. The Zinc Oxide we use in our range is mined from the ground and then purified via steam distillation to pharmaceutical grade, which means you could eat it if you wanted to?.

Because of a special manufacturing process, our Zinc Oxide is pH neutral and does not alter the pH of our products, ensuring it is gentle on the skin.

In addition to its sun protection properties, zinc as a trace mineral in itself, helps maintain collagen and elastin fibres which provide the skin with its firmness, helping in the prevention of sagging skin and wrinkles. It also links together amino acids that are needed for the formation of collagen which helps to keep our skin’s youthful appearance.

We use Zinc Oxide in our MG Naturals makeup line because it is not only gentle, safe & natural but has the added benefit of soothing anti-inflammatory & anti-microbial properties that help to heal your skin whilst providing complete broad spectrum sun protection from SPF 25 in our BB Creams to SPF 50+ in our Mineral Silk Foundation.

In our opinion you can’t do any better than Zinc Oxide.

Pink Lip Balm with beetroot powder

4 Jan

chap-stick-pink

What little girl, or big girl for that matter doesn’t like pink lip balm?

Nothing makes you feel better & prettier than applying slick, shiny pink chap stick to your lips.

My girls love chap stick, but I’m not keen on them licking petrochemicals & dyes off their lips all day long. So we decided to get in the kitchen & make our own from all natural, organic, edible ingredients that I am completely happy with my girls eating & licking off their lips all day long.

This chap stick is so great because it’s pink hue comes from organic beetroot that has been dehydrated & powdered, there are no foreign dyes or colours.

We have flavoured our chap sticks with sweet orange essential oil, but you could also use peppermint oil for a fresh flavour & extra lip plumping properties, my girls just won’t have a bar of it.

Exfoliating Grains, dry scrub mix

20 Oct

dry-scrub

This is my first time playing around with exfoliating grains & I have to say I love them. They are so quick & easy to make & can be used as a cleanser, mask & skin treatment.

Blend with a little water to make a great scrub cleanser to use as your daily cleanser. Add a little yoghurt, honey or an oil of your choice & you have a great treatment or mask to give your skin an anti-oxidant burst.

I like to use it each morning to wake up my skin, I leave it on while I brush my teeth, for a mini treatment – the kids call it my shrek face!!

I have chosen the ingredients of these exfoliating grains so that they not only cleanse & exfoliate but they also have great anti-oxidant & anti-ageing properties.

The kaolin clay cleanses & soothes your skin, the ground oats exfoliate & soften, the almonds create a lovely soft exfoliation, the milk powder moisturises, the brown sugar & bicarb soda polish your skin giving you a healthy glow.

The spirulina is our secret super ingredient, its full of anti-oxidants & chlorophyll  which cleanses the skin, strengthens tissues, helps skin to store moisture, improves elasticity & diminishes fine lines. Its soothing & hydrating & will assist in healing up any blemishes or skin conditions you may have.

spirulina-scrub

Exfoliating Grains a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 3 Tablespoons kaolin clay
  • 1 Tablespoon ground oats
  • 1 Tablespoon ground almonds
  • 1 Tablespoon milk powder
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon bicarb sida
  • 2 Tablespoons spirulina

Take all your ingredients & mix well in a bowl. Pour into a bottle or jar that has an airtight lid as any moisture will cause your grains to go clumpy & start spoiling.

exfoliating-grains

How to Use:

Always pour your grains out onto your hand & then add your liquid medium, so that no moisture can get into your exfoliating grains jar.

This dry scrub can be used with what ever liquid you feel will best serve your skin, I have to admit to just using plain old tap water, but I’d love to try using it with witch hazel or rose water for additional skin loving benefits.

If your skin is dry you can even use an oil of your choice to make your scrub, just be sure to wipe off all traces with a wet cloth or you may have a little green sheen going on.

To make your exfoliating grains into a mask, simply mix with plain yoghurt, honey, aloe vera or some coconut oil, smear on your face & relax, add some water & scrub off to gain the full benefits of your grains.

Enjoy
