Cellulite busting Coffee Scrub

6 May

IMG_7520

I am in love with scrubs at the moment, I have no idea why?

But I am.
There are so many reasons why. They are so easy to make, you can make them with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry & they leave you skin so silky smooth.

I have been experimenting with sugar scrubs, but was really keen to make a cellulite busting scrub, so you know it just has to have coffee in it. Coffee is one of the biggest buzz words in the anti-cellulite world.

So we decided to make a coffee scrub & include cellulite busting essential oils for that added detoxification. But you can make this scrub with no essential oils & it will still work a treat.

We added Juniper Berry essential oil for its de-toxifying effect, it’s also renowned for  reducing fluid retention & activating new tissue growth, perfect for giving cellulite the boot. We also added Grapefruit Essential oil for removing toxins & because it’s rich in bromelain a strong anti-inflammatory that will help to melt those fat deposits away. The Sweet Orange oil helps to increase circulation & blood flow to the area. Giving our scrub super anti-cellulite powers 🙂

We also added a touch of sugar for the glycol acid thats present in sugar, which will help to detoxify & un-clog pores at a deeper level so you get super silky smooth skin.

Cellulite Busting Coffee Scrub a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 1 cup ground coffee beans
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops Juniper Berry essential oil
  • 20 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 20 drops grapefruit essential oil

Grind your coffee beans to a medium grind (the coarser they are, the more scrub factor you will get – I prefer mine at a medium plunger style grind).

Add your sugar (I use white sugar as I feel the coffee beans already have enough scrub factor, but if you want a super scrub use Raw Sugar & for a softer scrub use brown sugar).

Stir in your sweet almond oil & your essential oils. Feel free to replace the almond oil with olive oil or coconut oil if that’s what you have on hand.

Place in a pretty jar & get ready to have “wake me up” scented showers.

TO USE:

Simply grab a handful of your scrub & gently rub it into your backside & legs, leave it on for a few minutes so that the coffee & glycol acid present in the sugar can penetrate your skin & do their job. Rinse off with warm water & enjoy smooth, silky skin that smells so so good 🙂

Make your own Facial Cleansing Wipes

12 May

facial-cleansing-wipes

Now I normally clean my face with our clay cleansing bars or our almond cleanser but we have been doing a bit of travelling lately  – yay!!

So I decided an all purpose facial cleanser that could remove make up, dirt, cleanse & tone my skin all in one quick little step was the ticket, so I could spend more time out exploring the big wide world 🙂

We set to work coming up with recipes to create our own facial wipes, we wanted them to be able to remove make up but not be too greasy & also have the toner element included so that they are a one stop shop. A simple swish, swipe & viola your done.

We decided to go with coconut oil as our cleansing element because I love the natural fragrance & its anti fungal, antibacterial properties which I think are great for cleansing your skin. But if your not partial to coconut oil, sweet almond oil makes a great substitute & maybe a slightly less greasy wipe so if you have oily skin this may be the way to go.

Witch hazel is our toning element, it is lightly astringent & perfect for soothing inflamed skin, great for drying our & healing pimples & is supposed to help with blackheads.

Making these facial wipes is super dooper easy, so I would suggest making a small batch every one to two weeks so that you don’t have any spoilage issues as there is no preservative involved in this recipe.

Facial Cleansing Wipes a’la Mama Going Natural

  • Packet of organic cotton facial pads
  • One sterile empty jar that your cotton pads fit in
  • 1/2 c witch hazel
  • 3 T coconut oil
  • 1 t Vitamin E oil
  • 5 drops of lavender oil (only if you want to)

Take your jar & fill it with the cotton facial pads, I ended up being able to use about 60 pads in my jar.

If its cold where you are (like it is here) melt your coconut oil gently over low heat, as soon as its melted (you don’t want it to get hot) add in your witch hazel, vitamin E & essential oils if you choose. Mix well & pour over your cotton facial pads, gently pushing the pads down so that they all get immersed in the liquid.

Screw on the lid & try to keep your jar in a cool, dark place so that your facial wipes will keep.

Then enjoy swish, swash, swipe make up removal.

Gum Healing Toothpaste

3 Mar

Sad but true fact – I have gingivitis ( a fancy way to say gum disease – I think I prefer gingivitis it almost sounds botanical).

I have slightly sore red, swollen gums, that I rarely ever notice. I have probably had it for a long time, but on a recent trip to the Dentist I had the FEAR put into me.

Bone loss, loose teeth, bye bye teeth……

Nooo

This sent me scurrying for natural cures for my gingivitis, my very expensive dentist told me to floss, floss, floss & to use an electric toothbrush (just in case you were wondering what I paid $220 for).

Now I already brush & floss, so that didn’t seem to be the smoking gun I needed to get rid of the gingivitis.

So as per usual & probably just like you I headed to the internet for answers.

What I found is that coconut oil, baking soda, clove oil & oregano oil are all powerful anti-bacterial agents. So I decided to make Gingivitis busting toothpaste to use with my new fangled electric toothbrush.

And I am happy to report that my teeth are looking whiter & my gums are nice & tight & pink looking, the gingivitis has been sent packing 🙂

A word of warning though, this is not the best tasting toothpaste & the clove oil does seem to numb my mouth a little – but it works!

IMG_0272Gingivitis Busting Toothpaste a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 2 T bicarb soda
  • 2 T coconut oil
  • 1 t stevia powder – to take the bite out of the bicarb
  • 10 drops clove oil
  • 5 drops oregano oil

Mix all ingredients in a container. If its too sour add more stevia powder to sweeten.

If you have really bad gingivitis add as much oregano & clove oils as you can stand as these are the smoking guns of this toothpaste.

Be sure to brush the gums & base of the teeth really well to get the oils & bicarb soda in where its needed.

Wishing you healthy gums

Yummy Spiced Lip Scrub

2 Nov

sugar-scrub-lip

I have to admit that I have always thought that lip scrubs were a little hokey!

It always seemed like a weird part of your body to scrub, your lips get licked, bitten & scrapped at all day long – leave the poor things alone.

That was till I actually tried a Lip Scrub!!

Wow! This scrub leaves my lips feeling, plump, silky smooth & hydrated. Perfect for sloughing away dead skin & preventing chapped lips – so much better than just applying lip balm all day long (which is what I previously did).

But be warned this Lip Scrub tastes dangerously good, you will have to use all of your will power not to lick it all off.

It is chock full of natural goodies, with the coconut oil moisturising & hydrating your lips as well as being antibacterial & anti fungal to keep lip nasties at bay. The honey is moisturising & antibacterial & the cinnamon will get your blood moving & plump up your lips.

And the best part – you have all of the ingredients in your pantry & this takes literally 30 seconds to make!!

Activated Charcoal Face Scrub for Purifying Pimples

7 Oct

actiavted-charcoal-scrub This stuff is the bomb for inflamed, break out prone skin, it is literally kryptonite to pimples.

This face scrub is chock full of antibacterial, healing, purifying ingredients. Now I will admit it does look a little odd & I did have my doubts about applying something goopy & black to my face to help with breakouts & blackheads – I just couldn’t figure out how that would work.

I was sure my pores would look dirtier & that my face may not come clean. But this stuff is magic. I like to gently scrub it in before I get in the shower then let it steam into my pores for five minutes before washing it off in the shower with my favourite cleanser (be aware it is a little messy) but & I am left with bright, sparkling, clear skin!

What makes this scrub so darn good? The activated charcoal gives this scrub its anti-acne properties as it draws out impurities, unclogs pores & purifies your skin leaving it clean & clear. The Shea butter is great for soothing inflamed skin, the coconut oil & turmeric are antibacterial & the baking soda gives your skin a nice fine scrub for super clean pores.

Activated Charcoal Anti-Acne Scrub a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 1 t Raw Sugar
  • 2 t almond meal
  • 3 t Shea butter
  • 1 t coconut oil
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 t activated charcoal
  • 1/2 t tumeric powder
  • 1 t bicarb soda

Gently mix all ingredients together in a bowl, except the shea butter & coconut oil, which you should gently melt by placing in a double boiler (or my home made solution of a canning jar sitting in a pot of simmering water). Once the oil & butter has melted stir it into the other ingredients & mix well.

I use this scrub several times a week as a deep cleanse for my skin, It leaves my skin looking brighter, clearer & the blackheads on my nose disappear 🙂

You are welcome 🙂 Mama-going-natural-signature

Oats, almond & milk Clay cleansing Bar

16 Feb

clay-cleansing-bar-2If your skin feels dry & tight after cleansing then this is the Cleansing Bar for you, it will leave your skin supple, moisturised & clean. I have been using it now for about two weeks & it is by far my favourite cleansing product EVER & that is saying something!

When I first started using it I was worried that it would be too moisturising & that I might be left with oily, greasy skin. But that has not been the case at all – my skin is hydrated, supple & smooth, if anything I feel like my skin looks clearer & cleaner!

This cleansing bar is so good for your skin because its packed full of skin goodies like hydrating cocoa butter, soothing shea butter, moisturising rice bran oil, deep cleansing kaolin clay, exfoliating almond meal, rejuvenating oats & anti-aging milk.

This is my new absolute favourite cleanser 🙂

So give it a go, your skin will Thank you for it!

Oats, almond & milk Clay cleansing Bar a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 40gm Cocoa butter
  • 20gm Shea butter
  • 30gm rice bran oil
  • 40gm Kaolin clay
  • 30gm powdered oats
  • 20gm milk powder
  • 10gm Almond Meal
  • 7 drops of Rose Geranium essential oil

First begin by powdering your oats in a blender or coffee grinder, try to make them as fine as you can or they will add a scrub like quality to your cleansing bar (but this is fine if you prefer to have a scrub-like consistency).

Measure out your cocoa butter, shea butter & rice bran oil & place them in a double boiler to gently melt on the stovetop.

While your butters are melting, measure out your clay, oats, milk powder & almond meal & place in a bowl. Once your butters have melted stir the mixture into your dry ingredients & combine well. Add your Rose Geranium essential oil & then pour your mix into your moulds. I use silicon cup cake & chocolate moulds as they make it super easy to pop your bars out once they have set in the fridge.

clay-cleansing-bar

To Use:

Ensure that you keep your cleansing bars dry so that they don’t go off as the bars contain no preservatives. The Bars are best kept wrapped in paper in the fridge & then just slice off a small amount for each application.

Moisten face, soften your piece of bar in your fingers then gently massage into your face & rinse off with warm water. If I am wearing make up I also wipe my face down with a face cloth to ensure that all make up residue is removed.

Enjoy

Home made Lotion Bars – great homemade gifts

20 Oct

lotion-bars

As Christmas fast approaches we are starting the fun of trialing different natural treats that we can make for all of our friends & family this festive season.

These lotion bars are super easy to make & don’t require any fancy equipment, they can be made using a muffin tray, cupcake pans or any empty containers you have lying around.

The bars are solid at room temperature & when rubbed onto your skin a tiny amount melts leaving a thin veil of moisturising butter & oil on your skin. They smell devine & feel silky smooth to touch – they are a real treat for dry skin.

Using our basic Lotion Bar recipe you can tailor make a bar for your loved ones by using different oils, butters & essential oils. Although they are a slightly feminine gift you can make a more masculine versionswith essential oils of cedarwood & tea tree oil to create a manly smelling lotion bar that would have antiseptic qualities.

Our Sweet Orange lotion bar is a great sweet smelling all round lotion bar with the added bonus of honey & soothing shea butter. While our Mocha Mint lotion bars are great for massaging into cellulite &  sore & tired shoulders – the coffee beans embedded through the bar create a lovely massaging sensation as you rub them over the skin & they have the added benefit of smelling like heaven 🙂

Sweet Orange Lotion Bars a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 2 teaspoons organic honey
  • 50 grams beeswax
  • 40 grams shea nut butter
  • 40 grams coconut oil
  • 10 drops of orange essential oil
  • 4 drops of geranium essential oil

Place wax, shea butter & coconut oil in a glass or ceramic jar or container – set this in a pot of simmering water to melt. Once they have all melted together take your mix out of the hot water & let cool slightly & add your honey & essential oils, stirring well. Pour into your moulds & let cool for 24 hours to set well. I find silicon muffin moulds work really well for this as the bars just pop right out. If you have trouble removing your lotion bars from the moulds set them in the freezer for a few hours to set hard & they should come out much easier. The recipe should make 4 muffin size lotion bars.

Mocha Mint Butt Bar a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 50 grams beeswax
  • 40 grams cocoa butter
  • 40 grams sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 4 Tablespoons of coffee beans

Make as with the Sweet Orange lotion bars, except after you have poured your mixture into the moulds top with 1 tablespoon of coffee beans for each mould.

Go forth & create yummy lotion bars – your family will love you 🙂
