Make your own decadent eye cream

14 Jan

My most sincere apologies I have been such a slack blogger of late. I won’t give you my list of excuses – because that’s all they really are, excuses.

But I promise I will be blogging more frequently.

Starting with this (peace offering) eye cream formulation that is heavenly. This eye cream will work just as well as all your fancy store brought ones just without the chemicals & hefty price tag.

I make it in a double batch & use it as a face cream too – just because I can.

It is light, silky & ultra hydrating with Rose hip & jojoba oil & our wrinkle busting, super restorative carrot seed oil. The organic green tea is chock full of antioxidants to start reversing the ageing process & get to work on those wrinkles.

Start using this & watch your wrinkles melt away……….You’re Welcome!!

Natural Wrinkle busting Eye Cream a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 1/8 c organic green tea
  • 12gm Rosehip oil
  • 12gm Jojoba oil
  • 12 drops carrot seed oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon vitamin E
  • 1/2 teaspoon Emulsifying wax
  • scent with your choice of essential oils or leave it plain as it is going around your eyes!

Place your organic tea in a clean, sterile glass bowl or jar & place in a gently simmering pan of water. Measure out the Rosehip & jojoba oil & wax, combine all three items in another sterile glass bowl or jar & place in the simmering pan of water to melt.

When the wax has melted, remove both jars from the simmering water & pour the liquid into your melted oil & wax mix & blend well with a stick blender, whisk or at worst a fork.

Be sure to blend well for a minimum of three minutes to combine your cream, once your cream is well combined add the Vitamin E & carrot seed oil & any essential oils you may want to add – blend well to combine & then let cool.

I preserve mine with .5ml of Leucidal so it keeps for forever, but an un-preserved batch will keep in the fridge for many months & you get the added soothing effect of cool lotion -great for treating puffy eyes.

Review by the Natural New Age Mum Sonia Donaldson

2015/01/img_9470.png We were very lucky to have our MG Naturals range featured by the Natural New Age Mum in her latest post on Natural make up. To try our range for yourself visit our website mg naturals today. ♥ MG Naturals MG Naturals stands for Mama Going Natural and is also Kailah, a natural new age mum from Queensland. Her range is fairly new and it’s available online. You can get foundation, BB cream, blusher and lip glaze. MG Naturals are all cruelty free, vegan, chemical free, hydrating & soothing and they are one of the few brands in the world who don’t use Titanium Dioxide, Boron Nitride or Magnesium Stearate in their make up lines. My daughter and I tested the BB cream and we like it. It’s a very sheer, light coverage so it’s good for her to wear to school as it doesn’t look like you are wearing make up but still gives a nice polished look. It was a little too sheer for me so I needed another application. It feels heavenly on your skin though – very light and in fact I forgot I was wearing it! MG Naturals is very reasonably priced with the foundations at $24.95 for 30ml and the lip glazes at just $9.95 for 15ml. To read Sonia’s full write up on the make up brands she loves visit here

Gentle Almond Cleanser

19 Jan

This cleanser is perfection! Its gentle, creamy, non-oily & has just the right amount of scrub to keep your skin fresh & black head free.

I used to buy a cleanser very similar to this one from a well-known “natural” company but after studying the ingredients and finding a wide array of known toxins I couldn’t use it & feel okay.

Although you may have to buy a few ingredients to make this cleanser – Its well worth it. I used to pay $17.95 for 100gms of this cleanser & for the same amount you can buy the ingredients to make many batches 🙂

This recipe has no preservative in it, so I recommend keeping it in the fridge although I have managed to keep it in the bathroom for several weeks at a time.

This cleanser not only scrubs your skin clean, but its also full of goodies like moisturising glycerine, soothing & anti-inflammatory Lavender, Sebum secretion balancing Rose Geranium, rejuvenating & smoothing Neroli & gentle kaolin clay.

But feel free to make it with what ever oils you have on hand or you think has the best properties for your skin. If you don’t want to purchase any essential oils you could always add in 1/2 t of a good quality oil, olive & heavier oils are best for dry skin & lighter oils like rice bran, grapeseed oils are better  for oilier skins

Gentle Almond Cleanser a’la Mama Going Natural

  • 5 t ground almonds
  • 5 t kaolin clay
  • 1T glycerine
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops Rose Geranium essential oil
  • 5 drops Neroli essential oil

Mix well & get ready to enjoy clean, fresh, moisturised skin.

Pinch off a small piece of your cleanser & add a little water & work into a paste between your fingertips, gently rub into your face, rinse off. To heal blemishes you can even leave it on as a facial mask 🙂

I hope you love this cleanser as much as I do 🙂

Sugar Free Candied Popcorn

5 Dec
pop-corn-honeyWith the Christmas season comes Parties!!
We LOVE parties around here and fortunately so do our friends!
But with all these parties comes the challenge of “what are we going to take to share?”
My daughter is used to our healthy, un-processed foods, but some of her friends are not so sure about trying new things & can smell a “healthy” food a mile off.
So my challenge is to make something I feel comfortable feeding my daughter & that all her little friends will like too. This candied pop corn fits the bill, it is truly delicious & even the fussiest of our little friends seem to keep coming back for more.
Made with Organic GMO free pop corn, honey & butter it only takes minutes to whip up & will keep an air tight container over night.
You can make a million variations of this recipe, add cinnamon & spices, vanilla essence & even peanut butter to create your families favourite candied pop corn variation.
Sugar Free Candied Pop Corn a’la Mama Going Natural
  • 3 T GMO Free Organic Pop Corn
  • 1 T coconut oil
  • 25 gm unsalted butter
  • 3 T honey
  • 1/2 t Himalayan salt

Place your coconut oil in a saucepan over high heat, add your pop corn kernels & keep shaking & moving your saucepan around to ensure that none of your pop corn gets burnt while its popping.

In another sauce pan place the rest of your ingredients & let them come to the boil. If you want soft sticky pop corn, let your candy ingredients boil only for a few minutes, if you want hard candied pop corn, let it boil for several minutes until the mixture begins to darken & if you place a drop in cold water it forms a soft ball.

I like my pop corn drowned in the candy sauce so I pour my freshly popped pop corn into my saucepan of hot candy mix & stir quickly to coat, but you can just as easily pour it over your pop corn & stir quickly to ensure it coats all of your pop corn before it goes hard.

Try this, trust me you will love it 🙂

How Toxic is your Sunscreen?

23 Jul

barrier sunscreen close up

Being a pale skinned girl living in the land of sunshine, sunscreen & I have been in a long-term relationship.

Sometimes it has been a little bit of a love/hate relationship – sunscreen can be sticky, smell bad & irritate my skin. But getting sunburned sucks!! Red & peeling is not necessarily my best look!

According to the Environmental Working Groups 2013 survey of over 800 sunscreen brands, 75% of the sunscreens tested contained potentially harmful ingredients linked to hormone disruption & even cell damage that may lead to skin cancer. Yikes, that does not sound good.

Your skin is your largest organ. Anything  you put on your body is absorbed into your blood stream within 20 minutes. Now that is a very scary thought when the majority of our sunscreen brands contain potentially harmful chemicals.

During the past 50 years, we have increased the number of synthetic sunscreen chemicals that we use. We have done this with virtually no consideration of how vulnerable we are to these chemicals – or how little we know about their subtle and cumulative toxic effects. We assume that because they are so easily purchased at the store, they must be safe to use. Wrong! Many of these chemicals are known to be toxic; very few are carefully studied before they are put on the shelf . There is no doubt that the products in everyday sunscreens are toxic. The only real question is: what effects are they having on us and our families?

The unknown long-term consequences of the chemicals in sunscreen are just starting to be revealed and the results are shockingly horrific, going far beyond the common skin rash.

Sunscreen is supposed to protect us from harmful UV radiation from the sun, but as more people use sunscreen, the incidence of skin cancer continues to rise. This fact alone has to make you think – do sunscreens really provide skin cancer protection? Or could the chemicals in them actually be contributing to causing skin cancer?

So what do you do??

First off Read your labels & avoid all products that don’t list their full ingredient’s or any products that contain the below ingredients

Oxybenzone –
This is a hormone disruptor which penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. It is the most popular ingredient in chemical based sunscreens and only blocks UVB ray (sun’s good rays that provide vitamin D production), not UVA which are the most free radical damaging rays.  Avoid any sunscreen that has this chemical at all costs, especially for children.
Octyl- mrthoxycinnamate –
Reported to cause photosensitization & photoallergic effects. It is a hormone disruptor that increases endocrine activity and has been linked to cancer in several studies by the Danish EPA
Methylbenzylidende camphor (4 MBC)
Linked to sperm anomalies, testicular & breast cancer. It is thought that it is especially harmful for children as it is a hormone disruptor & can cause troubles in pre-pubescent children.
A potent free radical generator that can cause dermatitis, rosacea, burning & itching.
Was the most widely used active ingredients until the mid-1980’s when it almost completely disappeared because of the high incidence of adverse skin effects. It is banned in Canada & only allowed at 5% concentrations in Europe but we still continue to use it here in Australia.
Padimate O
Forms free radicals that cause DNA disruptions.
Is used as a UVA absorber but can cause photo allergy  & contact allergy.           Parsol 1789 –
DNA damaging.
A known carcinogenic.
Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) –
A 2009 study by U.S. government scientists released by the National Toxicology Program found when this is applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, it may speed the development of skin cancers & lesions.
Fragrance –
Sure it may make the product smell nice, but this is a petroleum based product that is linked to toxicity & allergy.
Sprays or Powders –
Generally speaking, sprays and powders have additional chemicals added to them for performance purposes. These additional chemicals are usually not something you want to be spraying on your body and can be toxic to the lungs.
Titanium Dioxide
This mineral is often touted as a safe sun barrier but research has shown that the particles are not photo safe & that on exposure to the sun the titanium dioxide creates singlet oxygen, superoxide anions & hydroxyl radicals all of which are potent free radicals which can lead to mutant skin cells, skin cancers & premature ageing of your skin – who the heck wants that???

Barrier Sunscreen

So what should you look for?

  • Zinc Oxide is your safest option for a barrier sunscreen as unlike titanium dioxide it is photo stable.
  • Buy Organic where possible
  • Buy only from companies that list ALL ingredients on their packaging not just the “active” sun barrier ingredients.
  • Look for fragrance free or products scented by essential oils
  • Look for products that use oils that are naturally high in SPF, Carrot seed, Raspberry seed, wheat germ, coconut oil etc.

Going sunscreen free is not always an option, neither is covering up. Sunscreen is a necessity in my part of the world, so instead of trusting & hoping the big companies are delivering me a safe & natural product I have chosen to make my own sunscreen -that I know is 100% safe for my family and yours.
